If the news talked about white people like they talk about black people

“As an American of color who considers himself an ally to the white community, I’m just tired of seeing young, belligerent white people disgrace themselves year after year at surfing events, horse racing infields, and Ivy League campuses. Whites in America have been out from under their European ancestors’ boot heels for centuries; California specifically outlawed preferences for nonwhites in state hiring and education nearly two decades ago. So being “oppressed” is no longer an excuse for behavior like this. How long must we wait for the white community to get its act together?” Gawker

This Chris Hayes clip is from a few years ago, but it’s as relevant as ever. In it, Chris Hayes and Cord Jefferson spoof the way news talks about black people by turning that same language on whites. The difference is shocking.

Fact not Spoof: Will, Steele and O’Reilly failed to mention the exacting truth that white Americans are just as likely to be killed by other whites. According to Justice Department statistics (pdf), 84 percent of white people killed every year are killed by other whites.

It’s so PLAIN AS DAY and yet people really don’t like to listen or agree to this. As a teacher, I’ve tried to bring this up in class on occasion, and yet, I’m always met with uncomfortable stares. Sigh.

Unfortunatley too many people live in a bubble of selfishness, and its not just race. They don’t realize thier dogs howling bothers the neighborhood or their kids are terrors not darlings in the eyes of everyone else and when you bring it to thier attention they are personally attacked and or dismissives

Yes, the “personally attacked” part seems to be very true
