Jon Stewart discusses Racism and Equity

Speaking upon the Declaration of Independence, Stewart quipped, “If God creates us all equal, the American government somehow got to be the bouncer of that creed.” At that point, he goes into a brief history lesson of just a few of the ways that America has passed legislation that works against Black people. “I think equality will only come when the community can gain the equity that’s been taking from them,” Stewart says. He then highlights a few specific policies that were written to actively exclude Black people:

We did the Homestead Act, and white Homesteaders were given just millions of acres of land… someone was telling me that 20 percent of the wealth in that area can be traced to the Homestead Act, which explicitly did not include Black people. Federal Housing Administration in the New Deal explicitly said you cannot loan these low cost loans that were intended so that white people could gain equity. You cannot give them to Black people. This is the most progressive piece of legislation to happen on the soil of America, explicitly excluded Black people.
